Courses

Courses

Bass Chorus (BC) and Treble Chorus (TC)
Prerequisite: NONE.

Chorus classes are the entry level for all students who wish to sing in the FUHS Choral Music Program.  The courses emphasize beginning music theory, vocal technique, elements of music, and musical interpretation.  The courses include the performance and study of music from a variety of historical and cultural backgrounds, as well as contemporary genres.  Performance participation beyond school time is required for full unit credit (festivals, dress rehearsals, rehearsals, and concerts).

The current division of Chorus classes provides opportunities for Treble singers (Sopranos and Altos) and Bass singers (Tenors and Basses).  No audition is required to enter a Chorus class.

Bass Ensemble (BE) and Treble Ensemble (TE)
Prerequisite: Bass and Treble Chorus, or by audition and permission from the director.

Bass and Treble Ensemble represent the intermediate level of achievement and participation in the FUHS Choral Music Program.

It is at the discretion of the director whether Bass and Treble Ensemble may be repeated.  It is also at the discretion of the director to dismiss a student from this class if it is in the best interest of all the students in the class or if the student is constantly acting in a way that does not represent the integrities of the FUHS Vocal Music Program.

Vocal Ensemble (VE) - grades 10-12
Prerequisite: By audition and permission from the director.

The Vocal Ensemble is the premier auditioned ensemble for sophomore, juniors, and seniors in the FUHS Vocal Music Program.  Students will study and perform advanced levels of SATB choral literature composed specifically for small choral ensembles. Student achievement will involve the development of rudimentary vocal technique, posture, rehearsal procedures, and basic music theory. These skills will be reinforced and practiced daily to ensure vocal health, productive rehearsals, first-rate performances and the continued development of individual musicianship. Students in this class must attend all rehearsals, performances, festivals, and concerts as indicated by the calendar.  All performances are required.  Performances can include performing on campus, performing at state competitions, collegiate-level choral festivals, and local concerts. Rehearsal conduct, classroom attendance, and knowledge of music will all be calculated when going to festivals.

There are additional requirements for participants in this ensemble that include but are not limited to extra rehearsals, retreats, and community performances. It is extremely difficult for this ensemble to perform without all members – everyone in this group must be willing to commit to all of its rehearsal and performances in addition to all outside responsibilities.

ACADEMY OF THE ARTS

Students elect to become an Academy Student in their Freshman year. The Vocal Academy Pathway is completed during the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years. Current freshmen should anticipate doing this and participate in the Choral and Vocal Music Program at the highest levels possible during their freshman year. Please contact Ms. Kikkawa for more information about this pathway.

All freshman choral music students have the opportunity to enroll in the Triple Threat Performer Pathway in the Academy of the Arts Pathway. Students are enrolled in a special program that includes instruction in vocal music, theatre, and dance all four years of their high school experience. The “T3s” receive a wide range of instruction and opportunities that prepare them for the world of Performing Arts following high school. T3s will also complete the requirements of the Academy of the Arts and receive a distinctive tri-color cord to wear at Commencement. Please contact Ms. Stickel (jstickel@fjuhsd.org) for more information.

TRI-M MUSIC HONOR SOCIETY

This international Music Honor Society stresses the importance of Leadership, Service, High level Musical involvement and Community.
